AHDB are seeking quotes for a survey of the practices and attitudes of pig farmers relating to disease control, biosecurity and food safety. We aim to improve understanding of the barriers and opportunities on farm to controlling and mitigating risks.
Food safety incidents are a risk to human and animal health and are also a threat to the reputation of the pork industry. It is unknown to what degree pig producers see themselves as food producers rather than livestock keepers and how that may influence their approach to pork safety. Guidance and interventions to reduce these risks are hampered by the limited information available on how pig keepers respond to advice and how they perceive their role in food safety. This research forms part of the Collaborative Action for Pork Safety (CAPS) project, a collaboration between AHDB, APHA and the University of Hertfordshire funded by the Quadram Institute Bioscience. The CAPS project has three work packages: the first two are studies on the microbial ecology of pathogens on farms and in abattoirs. The third, and the subject of this tender, is a study on the practices and attitudes of pig farmers relating to disease control, biosecurity and food safety. We aim to improve understanding of the barriers and opportunities on farm to controlling and mitigating risks.
