The medical School wish to invest in a whole-slide scanner as a strategic step to create a digital archive that can be used for teaching and research. The technology, whole slides scanning, allows glass slides ? fragile and single ? to be converted into high quality digital images that will be stored electronically on a hard disc or server with the ability to replicate/copy/mirror, as required. These images can then be viewed by anyone with access to the world wide web. nThis represents a sea change in disciplines which involve viewing glass slides under a microscope (teaching in Micro-Anatomy/Histology and Pathology, Research based on animal or human tissues and diagnostic work in cellular pathology, microbiology and histology and cytology). This will allow:n1. Archival and distribution of key teaching, research and diagnostic material.n2. Instant access to this archive using the world wide web. n3. Enable e-learning and assessment in the relevant disciplines.n4. Application of digital analytical algorithms for research.
